Maria Kercado has been serving as Director for 1199-Mount Sinai. In 1996. She started
working with 1199��SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East as a Labor Organizer representing
healthcare workers in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.
In the year 2000, Kercado was appointed Vice President, representing workers from Lower
Westchester to the Albany region. In this capacity and with a team of ten organizers, she negotiated
the fi rst contracts that improved standards for healthcare workers.
As Executive Vice President of 1199��SEIU UHWE and with the invaluable leadership of her
16��staff members in her department, Kercado currently represents over twelve thousand
1199��members in one of the largest health systems in New York City.
As a member of several committees and coalitions she’s had the opportunity to participate in
social justice forums throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico and in many countries
in the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Kercado is a Vice President of the Westchester/Putnam Central Labor Body; President of the
Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) Westchester Chapter; a trustee of
several benefi t funds; an advisory board member of the Mount Sinai/ Selikoff Center for Occupational
and Environmental Medicine and a member of several other Committees.
Kercado resides in New York with her husband John Casiano.
