LIEBER

Dr. Joseph Lieber is the Director for the Department of Medicine for NYC Health + Hospitals/
Elmhurst.
After completing medical school in 1982, Dr. Lieber went on to train in Internal medicine at
Elmhurst Hospital, followed by a nephrology Fellowship at St Luke’s- Roosevelt Hospital. He
returned to Elmhurst hospital and became Associate Director of Medicine in 2002. Dr. Lieber
then became Director of medicine in 2017, the position he holds today. He is a site Director
for the Mount Sinai Internal medicine residency, as well as Associate Program Director for the
Internal Medicine Residency at Elmhurst. He holds academic appointments as an associate
professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Dr. Lieber ran the department of medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic and had key
interests in medical education as well as diagnostic medicine. He has won over 30 teaching
awards including The Solomon Berson Award which he has won eight times, Phi Beta
Kappa Honorary appointment, and the Mount Sinai Alumni Award in Medical Education. Dr.
Lieber has lectured nationally on topics in medical education, Internal medicine, as well as
nephrology. He has been active in teaching colleagues, medical residents, medical students
from Mount Sinai, as well as around the world.
His major interests outside of medicine include military history, classical music, as well as
cosmology.
