Nora Higgins worked as a Nurse at Stony Brook 22��years ago, and was a steward over an
unjust issue with an unfair manager. She believed her convictions strong, but questioned who
would help those that couldn’t, either due to them being timid or uneducated regarding their
union rights.
She later became Secretary of her local division and elected to be the Regional Coordinator
for NYS Public Employees Federation in 2015. Higgins directed others to maintain and improve
their work conditions, and prior to COVID, held activities that gave members an opportunity
to network and enjoy what Long Island has to offer.
In her RC role, Higgins was also on the Executive Council, Executive Board, Political Action
Committee, SUNY Labor Management Chair, statewide and local Nurses Committees, American
Federation of Teachers and Nurses Professional Policy Committee, Secretary and Executive
Board member with the Long Island Federation of labor.
Recently, she was appointed as a board member to Hofstra University Labor Studies program
and ALLOW.
