RITECHECK CASHING
Joseph Coleman has been serving as President of RiteCheck Cashing, a licensed check
cashing fi rm with fourteen locations in Harlem and the Bronx, since 1989. Coleman has held
leadership roles with a number of associations, serving as President of the Financial Service
Centers of New York, the New York State industry trade association, and as Chairman of Financial
Service Centers of America (FiSCA), the national trade association of the check cashing

industry.
In that capacity, he has helped educate regulators such as the FDIC and most recently,
the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, about the fi nancial needs and behaviors of
low-to-moderate income consumers. He also founded the Joint Industry Committee, a New
York cooperative of check cashers and credit unions.
Coleman was a grantee of Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) and the Ford Foundation to
develop an impulse-based savings program in the Bronx called Cash & Stash. Coleman holds
both an AB with Honors and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
