NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS/ELMHURST
Joann Gull is the Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy Executive Director for NYC Health +
Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all
functions of nursing and care coordination at one of the largest public hospitals in New York
City. Her daily responsibilities include overseeing a staff of over 2,000 and working closely
with the hospital’s leadership team to advance patient-centered care initiatives and plan for
strategic growth.
Gull started her career with NYC Health + Hospital in 1968, when she entered Kings County
Hospital’s School of Nursing. After graduating second in her class from nursing school in
1971, she joined Elmhurst Hospital as a staff nurse and became a head nurse, a clinical
supervisor, an Assistant Director of Nursing, and eventually the Deputy Director of Nursing for
the hospital’s busy Medical/Surgical Unit in 1993.
Following an additional two decades at Elmhurst, she became Chief Nursing Officer and
Deputy Executive Director in 2006. Gull has been involved in many professional organizations,
including the American Nurses Association, and the New York Organization of Nurse
Executives.
She received numerous awards and recognitions during her nursing career, including the
Fund for the City of New York’s prestigious Sloan Public Service Award, and the Outstanding
Nursing Leadership Award from the Brooklyn Catholic Nurses Association.
Gull has a BA in Sociology/Psychology from Marymount Manhattan College, and both a BS
in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Hunter College. She is a
Pennsylvania native but has proudly called the wonderful borough of Queens home for several
years.
