NEW YORK METRO POSTAL UNION
Jonathan Smith has been serving in his third term as President of the New York Metro Area
Postal Union, the largest local in the American Postal Workers Union (APWU). Smith has
emerged as a national leader in the fi ght to maintain a public Postal Service and resist postal
privatization. He has called for the recently appointed Postmaster General of the United
States, Louis DeJoy, to either resign or be fi red.
Smith has been a Vice-President and member of the Executive Board of the New York City
Central Labor Council.
Smith previously served as the Executive Vice-President of New York Metro. He has been a
career postal worker in the maintenance craft working as a mail-processing equipment mechanic
SALUTE TO LABOR
(MPE).
Smith’s great understanding of the impact that the Postal Service has on African American
workers and their families comes from his grandfather’s experience, as a career postal worker.
His grandfather took great pride in working for the post offi ce.
