Dr. Joan Curcio is the Associate Director of Medicine for Elmhurst Hospital Center and has
been in this position since 2017.
Completed residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center
Internal Medicine Program in Queens, New York.
She stayed on as Executive Chief Resident and then joined the faculty as a hospitalist, and
has spent her career to date at Elmhurst Hospital.
Dr. Curcio’s primary interest has been optimizing systems to ensure adequate health care
access for vulnerable communities. She became Division Chief in 2006, building the largest
division in the hospital; with areas of focus that include management of 200 inpatient beds,
resident training, a physician advisor program and most recently the Medical Consult Service.
In 2007 she took on the role of Director of Inpatient Services where major achievements
included formation of geographical units, a progressive care unit, a non-teaching service and
development of interdisciplinary rounds across the Medicine Wards.
Dr. Curcio became the Director of Observation in 2015 creating a standalone 10 bed Medical
Observation unit considered the Model Unit for future development across Health + Hospitals
Corporation.
She has been recognized as Elmhurst’s Doctor of the Year and as one of ACP’s top
Hospitalists.
