STEWARD
WEINBERG
PRESIDENT
LOCAL 20
Steward Weinberg is President for the Cement and Concrete Laborers’ Local 20and has been
a leader for thirty-nine years. Local 20was chartered on May 16, 1929and is the only Union
that represents cement and concrete laborers throughout the country.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Steward joined the Union at 21, as he was a second generation
of cement and concrete workers, and third generation construction laborer. Initially, Steward
did not aspire to be in the construction industry, however, after a year of watching his friends
and family build skyscrapers, he knew it was his calling. Some of his prouder projects included
the ground fl oor of the World Trade Center, the Hudson Yards, and the renovation of City
Hall. Through blazing summers and freezing winters, Steward has molded countless laborers
with both his trade secrets and real-life skills.
Steward’s father, Big Jim, was the master storyteller that introduced him to the union and
showed him the way. Although deadlines were always at the forefront of his mind, as a leader,
Stu wished that he took a little more time to soak in the panoramic views of New York City
and enjoyed more of his “day friends,” some of whom are no longer with us.
As he plans his departure from the Union, he has a long list of memories, particularly how
things were when he began as a young laborer.
Stu-man, as he is known by his friends, knows that his time as a cement and concrete worker
were well spent and well respected and that he is leaving the industry better than when he
found it.
SALUTE TO LABOR
