STREET STYLE

picked a great day to do some fashion scouting for June’s
street style spread, a sunny Saturday afternoon in western
Queens. While some of the fashionable locals and visitors I
spotted were going about their regular weekend business,
like running errands or hanging out with friends, several
of them were dressed to impressed to watch the Kentucky
Derby. The Derby is known as a fashion event in addition
I
to a horse race, so it was fun to see how Astorians put their own
spin on the classic wide-brimmed hats, colors and patterns —
one woman opted for a bold red in lieu of the traditional pastels
(and even added combat boots). Take a look at some of this
month’s best looks.
James, a peer counselor visiting a
friend, rocked a laid-back style with
jeans, a button-down and a hat. While
he chose all dark-colored pieces, he
brightened the look with his smile.
Ana (@anadonny), a paralegal enjoying her day
off with her friend, was on her way back from
watching the Kentucky Derby. She said her style
is usually “structured, color blocked and casual.”
I saw Ana walking across the street and had to
speed up to catch her. Her look was graced with
femininity and edge. I mean, come on: red dress,
hat and combat boots. You rocked it, girl!
Ayumi (@ayumo14)
was on her way
to hang out with
friends when I met
her. She describes
her style as
“modern chic." She
stuck to modern
black and white
pieces with a pop
of red, bringing
it home with a
personal touch by
adding her cap and
leather loafers.
