North Shore Towers and Country Club:
Still the best deal in town for tennis, golf and more
When it comes to tennis, golf, and luxury
living, North Shore Towers and Country Club
has long been offering what Mary Anne
Langone, country club general manager,
calls “the best deal in town.”
But a recent addition has made this deal
even better. New for the 2019 season, free
tennis is being offered for the first time
for all country club members during nonprimetime
hours, Langone says.
“We’ve had a terrific response” to the offer,
says Jerry Mantell, who has been living at
North Shore Towers for about two years and
is a member of its Tennis Association board.
About 120 people turned out to attend
the recent tennis night, where the board
introduced Alex Morris, the country club’s
new Head Tennis Professional, Mantell says.
The event kicked off the start of the tennis
season, which runs from April to November.
Anybody can use the tennis courts for
free if there’s one open, but between the
preferred hours of 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.,
members of the Tennis Association who pay
$85 a season have first priority on the courts.
“It’s a fun place to be,” Mantell says, noting
the tennis program is also “a very social
thing because we develop friendships and
companionships with so many different
people we meet on the tennis courts.”

Those who don’t live at North
Shore Towers are welcome to play
tennis at the club, but they need
to become club members at the
discounted annual promotional
fee of $1,695, down from $2,000,
he says. For that price, they
too get access to all the club’s
amenities, including its gym, two
swimming pools (one indoor and
outdoor), card rooms, and many
other social activities.
Also new for the 2019 summer season is
a Junior Tennis Summer Camp that’s open
to kids ages 6 to 18 for $60 a day per child,
with a discount offered for siblings. Those
who sign up are welcome to do so for any
amount of time they want: one day, one
week, or two months. Plus, there’s a discount
rate for those who sign up for two weeks
or more.
The Junior Tennis Summer Camp is being
run by Morris, the club’s new head pro, from
noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday
from July 1 to August 23. Preregistration is
recommended, but anybody interested in
signing up is welcome to do so at any time,
although it should be done at least a day
before a registrant starts in the program,
he says.
Prior to joining North Shore, Morris was
an assistant pro at the Woodmere Club and
he’s also a teaching tennis pro at Christopher
Morley Park in Roslyn.
“There was tremendous room for growth
here,” Morris says. “They have a great facility.”
Other new additions to the North Shore
tennis program this season include Open
Play, Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m.
to 8:30 p.m.
The country club offers five
Har-Tru green clay courts,
several of them lighted for
nighttime play. The club’s tennis
pro and staff offer private and
group lessons for every level
of play, and also arrange
tournaments, men’s, women’s,
and mixed league play, clinics,
team tennis, and special events.
The country club’s golf
program, meanwhile, is “going
really well,” Langone says.
North Shore Towers and Country Club is
located right off the Grand Central Parkway,
in Floral Park, and “offers luxury living with
the added surprise of a beautiful 18-hole
golf course, which is challenging enough
for the low handicapper but still playable for
the average golfer, and five Har-Tru tennis
courts,” Langone says.
“We’re right on the border of Nassau and
Queens, and they call us Long Island’s bestkept
secret because when people come
into the community, they can’t believe” all
the amenities that are offered, says Linda
Rappaport, an onsite broker at North Shore
Towers and Country Club.
Other amenities at North Shore Towers
include express buses to Manhattan, a
movie theater, a beauty salon, a drug store,
a supermarket, and a laundromat, even
though there are washers and dryers in the
apartments, she notes. Studio apartment
prices start at about $200,000, while
penthouses sell for $1 million and up, she says.
