Coyote Cinema
For a musical collaboration of
cinematic proportions, Coyote Cinema's
lyrically driven sound is deep
and meaningful. A fusion of syllables,
rhythm and tempo create intricate,
appealing songs that stick with you
long after you've heard them.
Ben Absurdo, a local Astoria musician
who plays bass and guitar for the
band, explained, “Everything is really in
service to the poetry, in a way that is not
the case in other bands I've played with.”
Absurdo named the band for his muse,
Elise Levitt, who is Coyote Cinema’s vocalist,
guitar player and lyricist.
“One evening, after Ben and I had had
several drinks, he asked me what kind of
animal I was,” Levitt said. “I paused for a
moment, then answered, ‘a dangerous one.’
From then on, he called me The Coyote.”
The charm in the songwriting evokes
a curiosity about the different paths we
take in life.
“So many of my songs have a theme of
life on the outskirts of normality,” Levitt
said. “I was also thinking of my songs as
presenting something to those on the
outskirts, like what would coyotes watch,
you know?”
Levitt explained the band’s sound further:
“The components of our sound
come from the deep rhythmic basslines
of the love of my life and musical genius,
Ben Absurdo; the melodic and joyous
sounds of Kyle Rogers, who finds and
brings out a sweetness in my songs with
mandolin and guitar; and Keith Malonis,
giving my music a pulse and motion and
finding a nice rolling path for my wandering
lines. These guys follow a poem, understand
the purpose in my syllabically
driven songs and give life to my writing.”

“Everyone sings and writes songs, so it’s pretty
communal,” Wiederkehr said. “It’s like Fleetwood
Mac but without the drugs, sexual tension and
chart-topping hits.”
The band transcends any one specific genre.
“Conceptually, we aim to sound like what would
happen if some music geek’s record collection
broke free, started its own band, and hollered along
to a few loud guitar chords,” Wiederkehr said.
