She recruited her friend, fellow
teacher and artist Christy Coiro
— also an Astoria resident — and
commissioned a series of handdrawn,
pen-on-paper sketches
of NYC landmarks. Bambling’s
vision was fulfilled by Coiro’s talent,
and the art got such praise from Bambling’s
guests that the two women felt
like they might be onto something. After
Bambling’s June 2014 wedding, Bambling
and Coiro launched their stationery
business, Pineapple Street Designs, with
Bambling as the paper stylist and Coiro
as the designer.
But things didn’t pick up right off the bat.
“We started small with greeting cards,”
Coiro remembered, but the two “took a
little break” once Bambling had her first
child, Jackson, in June of 2015. While
Bambling was on maternity leave, Coiro
created another series of invites for her
cousin’s Long Island-set wedding. Some
of the NYC landmarks carried over from
Bambling’s invites, and others that she
drew were more specific to the couple’s
journey. Once again, the reaction was
overwhelmingly positive: “Nobody does
this,” the guests told her. “You need to
make this a business.”
Astoria resident Bekah
Bambling and her nowhusband
met in New York
City. They both knew that they
wanted their wedding to pay
some sort of tribute to the place
that had meant so much to
them over the course of their
relationship, and their invitations
seemed like a perfect way to
showcase this love. Bambling
scoured websites and shops in
search of stationery, but found
that “it was either really custom,
very expensive, one-of-a-kind
stuff that just wasn’t in our
budget,” or it “was a little cheesy
and affordable.” So, she needed
to get inventive.
