R. Andrés
R. Andrés has taken the Astoria music
scene by storm with ambition and talent
with songs that bring a soulful, intimate
experience to an urban environment.
R. Andrés is sometimes a solo act, and
other times it’s a four-piece band. Its
name connects the lead singer and guitar
player Andrew Laskey to his roots of
being adopted from Columbia. Like his
birth name, music has been part of what
defines him.
“Like music, whether or not I realized
it when I was younger, that’s been something
that’s a part of who I am from day
one,” Lasky said.
His influences come from everything
he listens to, Lasky explained: “My style
is a mix of things from Americana to pop,
from rock to country, and whatever other
styles may arise from there.”
R. Andrés as a solo artist is Astoria's
John Mayer, bringing melodic guitar riffs,
thoughtful lyrics and a sweetness to every
song.
When R. Andrés plays as a band, Lasky
is joined by Keith Malonis on drums, Ben
Absurdo on bass and Virginia Marcs on
backing vocals/percussion. Each player
brings their seasoned individual styles to
create a fuller, kinetic sound.
R. Andrés has played at many venues in
western Queens such as Sek'end Sun, LIC
Bar, The Quays, Irish Whiskey and Single-
Cut Beersmiths.
R. Andrés dares to dream of the perfect
lineup for a local show: “If I had to decide,
because really I’d say everyone I know in
the scene, but since I do have to choose, I
think the perfect lineup would be myself,
of course, Virginia Marcs, Coyote Cinema.
I just feel the balance of what each band
brings to the table is identical in one way
or another.”
R. Andrés will be recording their EP this May
at Pinch Recording in Long Island City.

Recalculating
Recalculating is a three-piece band that
plays high concept rock ‘n’ roll. Their music
pays tribute to the likes of Television
when they played on CBGB’s dirty stage.
The lineup includes Scott Sendrow
on guitar and vocals, Sean Wiederkehr
on bass and vocals, and Michael Sendrow
on drums and vocals. The band’s
name and signature all began with a
wrong turn.
“The soothing voice of the GPS recalculated
a new route without delay,” Wiederkehr
explained. “We now take that approach
with our own songs and favorite
covers whenever we get lost.”
The members of Recalculating are
big music fans who appreciate different
styles, especially the DIY spirit of underground
music from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
