Music
BY MARIE GRILLO
As the flowers bloom and the leaves grow, so
does the western Queens music scene. There
are more venues popping up, and more people
coming out to listen to the expanding number
of bands and songwriters. It’s an exciting time
if you live in or frequent western Queens. It’s
time to plan out your next music venture. Here
are some suggestions for where to start:
Eulogy Club
Would a Queens band by any other
name sound as good? Eulogy Club’s
singer and guitarist Colin Fitzpatrick explained
the band’s reflective name: “We
sometimes write what may be called ‘sad’
or even ‘morbid’ music, but a Eulogy Club
is still a club, and that's a joyous, explorative
thing. It sums up our two sides.”
Not to be outdone by a name, Eulogy
Club's sound is reminiscent of the good
part of the ‘90s (think Pixies, Stone Temple
Pilots or Fuel). Fitzpatrick has an engaging
stage persona, including masculine vocals
and comedic banter.
“We are a four-piece that happens to have
two and sometimes three lead vocalists during
the show,” Fitzpatrick said. “Instrumentally
it's just bass, keys, drums and guitar.”
The sweet vocal and synth tone of keyboard
player and vocalist Debbie Chou
adds a splash of pop presence, creating
a solid sound.
Lee Diamond's hard-hitting, abstract
drum style complements the arrangement
and feeds into the vibrant bass playing of
Nathan Scalzone and Fitzgerald’s raw rock
guitar.

“Playing with different styles
of music is all I’m after,” Diamond
said. “I enjoy the variety
of tastes in Eulogy Club. It’s
an eclectic mix. We all listen
to a lot of music and combine
unique influences when we
play together.”
Their music keeps evolving,
Scalzone explained: “I feel we
are nearing the end of a basic,
primitive stage of music-making,
a grand era that began with the
advent of the electric guitar and
ran essentially from ‘Hound Dog’
to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ and that we are
now entering a much more romantic era,
where the ideas of the artists are truly beginning
to dominate the medium of the band.”
Eulogy Club members are preparing
new songs and will be headed back into
the studio soon. In addition to checking
out the performances listed here, keep
an eye on Eulogy Club’s social media accounts,
because they will be playing frequently
in western Queens this spring and
summer.
