The New Year workout that combines
every class you need in 50 minutes

“So is this your first workout
on a Megaformer machine?”
“Uh, yes?” I said. It took me two more
times asking what the word was to actually
remember it. A Megaformer.
When I first entered the Lagree NY studio
on 23rd Avenue in Astoria (off the Ditmars
subway stop), I was a bit intimated by all of
the machines and my fit classmates.
I’ve done my fair share of exercise classes
in New York — my old job used to give out
free SoulCycle passes; I did ClassPass for
six months, trying workouts from pilates to
trampolining to Krav Maga; and I did personal
training sessions at my local gym. But
as I got used to my new freelance writing
lifestyle (and budget) a few months ago, I
canceled my gym membership and have
recently just been taking long walks or jogging
for exercise.
All that is to say, I didn’t go in with a super
fit background — and no, I hadn’t encountered
a Megaformer before.

Andrea Dusel-Foil, gave me a rundown of
the machine (the infamous “Megaformer”)
before class. It was lot to take in — there are
two platforms on each end, a “carriage” that
slides back and forth in the middle, long
springs you adjust as per the instructor’s
directions, multiple bars, numbers that indicate
where you place your hands for certain
moves, and more. It was a bit “in one ear out
