3. CHELSEA GROEN
“My personal style is to be kind and
encouraging while also kicking your
ass,” Groen said, describing her workouts
as high-intensity interval training
that combines cardio and strength
training. The benefit of personal training,
she said, is the motivation. “You're
going to work harder with a personal
trainer even more than in a group setting
because it's one-on-one, and you
don't have anybody to hide behind,”
she said. Groen hosts clients in her
Astoria apartment but can also travel
to them. She even offers remote plans,
providing customized workout PDFs
and demo videos.

2. VARVARA KALININ
Astoria resident Kalinin is a dancer, so it only
seems natural that she would prioritize posture. She
described her sessions as “cross-training grounded
in Pilates, corrective exercise and post-rehab,” and
the first time she meets her clients, she studies their
gait, noticing any habitual movements and patterns.
“The way I train is more of a body conditioning
session to stabilize the body and make movement
more efficient, versus just pure weight lifting,” she
said. And her goal, ultimately, is to make her clients
feel more at-ease in their bodies. “Exercise should
make you feel better
— and happier!” she said.
