6. DORIAN CERVANTES
Cervantes is a dancer by trade, so it only makes
sense that she would incorporate dance into her
day job. Not only does she lead group classes like
Cardio Dance Your A** Off and Shredd at the Park
(hosted in Astoria Park), but for her one-on-one
classes, Cervantes trains clients in-home, at their
personal gyms, and out of Iconoclast in Manhattan.
And although personal training can sound like
a dirty word for some people, Cervantes wanted
to change people’s outlook, comparing it to visiting
a spa. “We are here to make you healthy, to
make you happy, to make you feel good
— not to
intimidate you,” the Long Island City resident said.

7. GABRIEL JIMENEZ
Jimenez has been at Sage Fitness Astoria in
his home neighborhood for the past two
years, where he trains clients based in
the Functional Patterns methodology.
He described Functional Patterns as
“optimizing our body and our movements
as intended by nature.” Like
Kalinin, he’s big on gait analysis, explaining
that he can tell how damaging
someone’s sedentary lifestyle is
just by watching them walk. But the
good news is that this can often be
course-corrected: “By fixing the most
basic movement, we can greatly enhance
agility, mobility and explosiveness as it relates
to sports performance,” he said.
