8. MARIYA MOVA
Mova’s first order of business with new clients is asking what exercise they
hate, because she doesn’t want to torture them with something they’re miserable
doing. “This is not a football team!” she said. “I want them to enjoy the
workout and to be looking forward to it.” Mova, now an Astoria resident, has
lived everywhere from Australia to Dubai. She still has clients contact her from
the far reaches of the world, which is a testament to her personal training abilities.
“I don't stick to a workout that I've been doing 20 years ago,” she said. “I
like to learn new things myself, and then I like to share those things with my clients
and always make their workouts new, innovative, fun and challenging.”

9. DANIEL MCKENNA
Although McKenna was born in the Bronx,
his parents moved back to their native Ireland
when he was four. The personal trainer relocated
to New York two years ago
— ironically to
the very Irish Sunnyside. In addition to training
clients out of the Independent Training Spot in
Manhattan, he plans to start at New York Sports
Club Lab in January. “I’m hoping to bring my
own Irish stamp onto some classes,” he said.
What’s more, McKenna emphasized that he
tries to make his sessions fun
— while also giving
clients a great workout. “It definitely wouldn’t
be a boring gym session,” he pointed out.
