10. LUIS NOVAS
“A lot of times we get caught in routines in life, so this translates heavily
into the way that we do our exercises,” Novas said. “We're just so repetitive
with the training that it becomes monotonous, and the body acts accordingly.”
The Astoria resident is currently a personal trainer at the Blink
Fitness on Steinway and will also begin teaching classes at The Row in
February. The benefit of a personal trainer, he said, is to have an outside
perspective
— someone who can find the flaws in your routine and shake
things up. Novas is obviously passionate about what he does, and he emphasized
building a rapport with his client and getting them to loosen up.
“We always have fun,” he said. “We’re always joking.”

11. DAN GONON
You’d be forgiven if you’d never
heard of the Sanctuary Method before,
which Gonon utilizes in sessions.
His friend, JJ Caruncho, founded the
method, which Gonon described as
“a new wellness art that fuses and
combines the best of all worlds.”
These “worlds” include gymnastics,
calisthenics, yoga, performance psychology,
nutrition and even meditation.
He lives in Long Island City,
so he trains clients in-person and
also does remote personal training.
Gonon emphasized the importance
of educating clients, describing the
Sanctuary Method as “an Ivy League
education for wellness and health, as
opposed to just typical workouts that
make you sweat. We're trying to train
you to be good at the sport of life,
and that requires a lot of education.”
$100-$150/HOUR, IN PERSON
