Rockaway
An 11-mile-long peninsula with great beaches and surf-friendly
waves, Rockaway has been a popular summer resort since the
1830s. The A train, the Q53 bus, NYC Ferry and private vans
take people there and back.
There are countless summer attractions ─ including surfing
shops, jet ski rentals and concession stands ─ but Rockaway is
also a residential area with suburban homes and year-round retail.
Here are some of the warm-weather options.
CAMP ROCKAWAY
An outdoor campsite with safari-style, 10-foot-by-12-foot canvas
tents just behind the dunes at Fort Tilden is open from June 11
through Oct. 31 — longer if the weather permits.
Located within earshot of Atlantic Ocean waves that crash on the
Breezy Point shore, each tent is on a raised wood platform with
a deck and two canvas lounge chairs in a family-friendly site that
includes fire pits, a picnic-and-grill area, hammocks, a supply
store, a phone-charging station, bathroom and shower facilities,
and games such as cornhole, a long-time Rockaway tradition.
Each tent is furnished with a Queen-size bed featuring a memory
foam mattress, side tables, solar lights, pillows, linens, blankets,
towels, and cleaning supplies.
Inside scoop: Camp Rockaway is a short walk to the Riis Park
Beach Bazaar.
Address: Davis Road between The Chapel at Fort Tilden and the
Atlantic Ocean, Breezy Point, and www.camprockaway.com.
