This new Bayside ice cream shop is truly on a roll BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI [email protected]/@smont76 Though temperatures may just have begun to drop, be sure to treat yourself to a perennial icy dessert trend that has found a home right here in Bayside. Roll Smash Ice Cream Bar at 45-43B Bell Blvd. is serving one of the newest sweet treat crazes — Thai rolled ice cream. Owners Dan Kim and Min Kim decided to open up the special ice cream bar within their food establishment Pâté — which serves variations of Vietnamese street food — allowing customers to get their sweet and savory bites to eat in one place. “Bayside doesn’t have anything like the rolled ice cream,” Min Kim said. “So they really, really like it.” Watching the process of creating the confection is almost as fun as eating the finished product. Pictured below is the making of the Breakfast Cereal rolled ice cream, which features sweet milk ice cream, Fruity Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch cereal, fresh strawberries and strawberry sauce and is one of eight selections currently offered on the menu. Thai rolled ice cream is created first by pouring a milk-based liquid on an extremely cold metal surface. Staff members then use a pair of special metal spatulas to manipulate the liquid, which eventually becomes a solid ice cream, and adds a variety of toppings and treats into the mix. The mixture is then smoothed out and carefully carved into small rolls, which are placed into a cup and adorned with various toppings. What sets this rolled ice cream apart from others is that the ice cream is milk-based rather than custard-based, according to Dan Kim — creating a lighter and more refreshing ice cream. Food choices at both the ice cream bar and Pâté are constantly changing and new items are always popping up on the menu, the owners said. The most recent addition to Roll Smash’s menu are milkshakes and frappes. As far as savory food options go, Min Kim highly recommends the Bánh mì — Vietnamese sandwiches served on a French baguette. “Bayside didn’t have the Vietnamese sandwiches either, so they’ve responded really well,” Kim said. Another interesting savory bite are the Kimchi fries, which features French fries topped with a house-made kimchi stir-fried with bacon and a creamy chipotle sauce — comfort food with a kick. “Everything is made in-house: fresh ingredients; everything is à la carte … We don’t have anything pre-made.” Dan Kim said. All ice creams are $6 each. The location is open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sundays. Art exhibit in Bayside celebrates local actors from the ‘20s BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI [email protected]/@smont76 Lights, camera, action Bayside! With a grand opening taking place tonight, The Castle in Fort Totten Park will be home to the Bayside Historical Society’s (BHS) latest art exhibit: “Bayside: The Actors’ Enclave.” The project transports you back nearly 100 years to the glitz and glamour of the Roaring Twenties and illuminates Bayside’s special connection to its film scene: many stage stars of the era called Bayside home. The exhibit will feature various photos, posters, newspaper articles, memorabilia and silent films from the era straight from the historical society’s archives. The grand opening is tonight, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in the ground floor exhibition hall at the Castle located at 208 Totten Ave. There will be live music and refreshments served. Admission is free for BHS members and $5 for not-yetmembers. For more information, visit the official event page or call 718-352-1548. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturdays. BHS was founded in 1964 and collects and preserves information concerning the history of Bayside and offers a variety of programs in the arts and humanities.
