This event was sponsored by Sinai Chapels of Fresh Meadows, to recommit to combating anti-Semitism and hatred. The keynote address, The Holocaust in American Film, by award-winning author and educator Dr. Annette Insdorf, will feature clips from the films None Shall Escape, The Pawnbroker, and Schindler’s List. The program, which was free and open to the public, included a candle- lighting ceremony with Holocaust survivors and family members escorted by students from the college’s Center for Ethnic, Racial, and Religious Understanding, each of whom makes a commitment to combat anti- Semitism and hatred after introducing the survivor. There will also be a multicultural invocation and audiovisual and musical interludes. Dr. Annette Insdorf is an internationally respected expert in film and Holocaust studies. Her landmark study Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust (with a foreword by the late Elie Wiesel) received the National Board of Review’s William K. Everson Award in Film History in 2003. The child of Holocaust survivors and an alumna of Queens College and Yale University, she is an award-winning educator, scholar, and public intellectual. Formerly at Yale University, she is now a professor in the graduate film program and past director of undergraduate film studies at Columbia University. She often serves as a juror at international film festivals; many New Yorkers know her through her popular “Reel Pieces” series at the Manhattan 92nd Street Y.
