Weidman, Associate Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Queens College (CUNY), will discuss the works of three contemporary Native American novelists: James Welch (Blackfoot), Louise Erdrich (Anishinaabe, also known as Chippewa or Ojibway), and Linda Hogan (Chickasaw). All three writers are considered by various scholars as founding and/or significant authors of the Native American Renaissance literary movement of the late 1960s onwards. Their writings often contain elements of the reclamation of Native American cultural and artistic heritage; the devotion to sacred sites and the environment; and the treatment of Native Americans caught between two worlds as a central theme. Professor Weidman will ably guide us through a genre of literature that has rarely been presented to a public library audience. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited; first-come, first-served. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglaston/ Little Neck Community Library in celebration of National Native American Heritage Month (November 2016).
