HUMOR AT ONE’S COMFORT LEVEL
Take A Tour and Get To Know
A Good Neighbor
On July 17, the
Brooklyn College
Alumni were taken
on a virtual tour of the US
Merchant Marine Academy
(U.S.M.M.A.) at Kings Point
by George Rhynedance, West
Point graduate, AH-64 Apache
Pilot and Director of Congressional
and External Affairs at
the U.S.M.M.A.
Did you know? The
U.S.M.M.A. was built on a site
originally owned by the well-
known retailer Henri Bendel.
The property and building on
it were purchased by auto magnate
Walter Chrysler as a summer
home while the Chrysler
Building was being constructed.
In 1942, another owner,
the Lundy Family (of seafood
renown) sold the property to
the U.S. Government and in
1943 the U.S.M.M.A. was dedicated
by FDR to devote all of its
efforts to the national emergency
of WWII. The mission of the
Merchant Marine is to transport
cargo, both commercial
and military, all over the world
and to train skilled seaman and
ships’ captains to operate and
maintain the large sea vessels
which transport cargo.
The U.S.M.M.A. educates all
of its matriculates at no cost to
the student or his family. What
does this free education, valued
at $280,000 per student, bring
the graduate? After completing a
rigorous academic program and
real world experiences in sea vessels,
midshipmen graduate with
a Bachelor of Science Degree, a
U.S. Coast Guard License and
an Officer's Commission in The
US Navy or other branch of the
military. These rewards pretty
much insure an exciting future
and potentially a very handsome
salary. Full disclosure, each
graduate is required to fulfill a
service obligation to repay the
federal government's substantial
investment.
So what about women?
From 2,000 applicants, 280
students were accepted into
the U.S.M.M.A.’s class of 2023
and 25% were women. This
academy is proud to say they
were the first federal service
academy to accept women (two
years ahead of West Point).
We all have an invitation
to visit our neighbor the
U.S.M.M.A. at Kings Point, "a
national treasure that should not
be the best kept secret among
the federal service academies."

Many of our past outstanding
comedians
have found a way to
ridicule and demean tragic historical
events, i.e. Hitler’s rise
to power and anti-Semitism.
For example, Charlie Chaplin’s
film, “The Great Dictator,” and
Mel Brooks’ “The Producers”
as a movie and as a musical on
Broadway received acclaim by
a variety of audiences. Today,
many contemporary comics and
talk show hosts seem to feel that
nothing is “off limits” any more.
We ask ourselves how there can
be any Jewish humor connected
with the Holocaust?
On August 14, 2019, the
Migdal Chapter of Hadassah
has invited a Jewish humorist,
Dr. Linda Burghardt, to entertain
us. Her routine centers around
humor and the Holocaust. The
event will be held in the large
card room at 7:30 P. M.
Dr. Burghardt has a Ph.D. from
Long Island University and has
been a freelance journalist for
the New York Times for the past
20 years. She is also the author
of three non-fiction books. Dr.
Burghardt is the daughter of
Holocaust survivors from Vienna.
Her articles and essays pertaining
to the Holocaust and related topics
have appeared in newspapers
throughout the United States. She
has a deep commitment to continue
to lecture both nationally
and internationally on Holocaust
topics to a variety of audiences.
Currently, she serves as a scholar
in residence at the Holocaust
Tolerance Center in Glen Cove,
Long Island, and resides in Great
Neck, Long Island.
Join the Migdal Chapter of
Hadassah to see and learn why
figuring out what’s funny can be
a matter of one’s perspective and
comfort level.
