NORTH SHORE TOWERS CARES FOR THE NEEDY
The Migdal Chapter Of Hadassah at North Shore Towers presents…
“Barren Island” – Hadassah Book Club’s August Selection
“The novel is impeccably
researched and the characters
leap off the page and grab your
heart.” ~ Historical Novel
Society .Org
“The island itself is as central
to the novel as the members
of the…factory families
that inhabit it, who live their
entire lives steeped in the smell
of rotting and burning animal
flesh.” ~ The Lilith. Org
““Barren Island” is a wonderful
synthesis of character
and history.—the author
immerses us in a world most
readers would never otherwise
have known existed.” ~ Paul
Harding, Pulitzer Prize Winner
for Fiction
“Barren Island,” the award-winning historical
novel by Carol Zoref, will be discussed at the next
Migdal/Hadassah Book Club Meeting on Wednesday,
August 28, at 2 p.m. in the Coleridge Lounge. Bern
Rosenthal and Arlene Augenbraun will lead the
discussion of the riveting, compelling, little known
story of this island, an island that no longer exists.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Isolated from the rest of New York, Barren Island,
located in Jamaica Bay, was home to a group of
immigrant families working in its factories from the
mid-19th century until the late 1930s, producing
among other things, glue rendered from the City’s
dead horses and other large animals. The odor
emanating from the Island was so noxious that it
could be detected miles away. Once the factories
were no longer functioning, the Island was joined
to mainland South Brooklyn by landfill and became
Floyd Bennett Airfield.
“Barren Island” was long-listed for the National
Book Award Winner National Jewish Book Awards.
Here’s what the critics are saying about “Barren
Island”:
Discussion Wednesday, August 28, 2pm
Coleridge Lounge
This riveting, Academy
Award-winning
film stars Paul Lukas
(“Watch on the Rhine”) and
is based on the novel by
Kathrine Kressmann Taylor.
It first appeared as a short
story and Reader’s Digest
reprinted it. Its publication
as a book was widely read
and republished around the
world.
The film tells the story
of two families caught up
in the rise of Nazism in
Germany prior to the start
of World War II. The story is so
current it could have been released
today.
NST residents Joan and Irwin
Robinson will be introducing
the film and leading a discussion
afterwards. They hope that you will
enjoy the presentation. A copy of
the book will be given to a lucky
resident as a door prize.
Mark the date on your calendar
and come early to secure a seat.

North Shore Towers, in
partnership with Commonpoint
(the merger
between Samuel Field Y and Central
Queens Y), has once again
championed for the needy in the
community. The directors representing
Commonpoint are Judith
Vladimir, Samuel Field Y, and
Sam Schachter, Central Queens
Y. Located in its own house at
Central Queens Y in Forest Hills,
Commonpoint is a thriving and
well-organized food pantry where
food is distributed to needy clients
on a daily basis.
Arlene Greenwood and I,
co-chairpersons of “North Shore
Towers Cares for the Needy,” visited
the Central Queens Y and were
impressed with the well-organized
registration and the shelves filled
with kosher food only so that everyone
with special dietary needs is
included.
North Shore Towers residents
responded most generously to the
donation for the month of June
--knitting yarn for “Giving Dolls,”
a worldwide program whereby
dolls are knitted for children who
are in need of this basic nurturing
item. Building 1 contributed the
most yarn in June and continued
contributing briskly into early July.
Following is a calendar of
collections for August and
September/October combined.
AUGUST: School Supplies
Drive--new pencils, pens, notebooks
and other school supplies.
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER:
**NEW ITEMS ONLY** Home
Cleaning Products Drive--Cleaning
supplies, soaps, detergent, dishwasher
soap, sponges, wipes, towels,
napkins.
Again, North Shore Towers residents:
Keep doing what you’ve been
doing so well. Donate to the needy
and feel good about doing so!
