JULIANA WINTERNST'S
Youngest Schoolgirl Resident
Eloise at the Plaza was a book and film about an irrepressible schoolgirl living at the
famed hotel populated with adults. North Shore Towers has our own 9 year old resident
who was actually born here, Juliana Winter. Like Eloise, she was quite adventurous as a
pre-schooler. For example, she had Security chasing after her as she rode her tricycle in the
Arcade. “I was always careful not to bump into anyone.” she recalls. Neighbors take pride
in watching her grow up into a lovely young lady with a variety of interests and friends.
WHERE DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL?
I attend P. S. 115 in Glen Oaks. I'm in a
4th Grade Gifted and Talented Class. We have
challenging homework and many after-school
activities that I enjoy. For example, I stay after
school and on different days I'm in Chess,
Computer Programming where I am learning
Coding, and the Chorus.
Josslyn is one of my closest school friends
and we enjoy many of the same things. Here
at NST I spend time with an older girl Sara,
and love joining her when she walks her dog,
Jack, a Maltese-Poodle. Other times, I invite my
NST friends to come over and watch movies
together, like Harry Potter. We enjoy playing
in the snow during the winter.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING
THIS SUMMER?
For the past 4 years I've been going to the
Queens College Summer Day Camp. It's really
fun. The counselors are great and the kids come
from all over Queens. Swimming is probably
my favorite activity. I've been doing that since
I was 4 years old. Of course, I enjoy the indoor
pool at NST but at camp I've been diving into
the 12 foot deep pool, that's really cool. In
addition, I enjoy soccer, basketball and tennis.
I love tennis. My Uncle Steve is a retired judge,
Judge Stephen Taub, and an excellent player,
he introduced me to the sport. His wife, Aunt
Aly, also is an accomplished player and always
reminds me to “Keep your eye on the ball at
all times.” My parents take me to carnivals,
movies and the ocean at Jones Beach. I think
I enjoy swimming in the pool more, both at
camp and at NST.
HAVE YOU GONE ON ANY TRIPS
WITH YOUR FAMILY?
Yes, last August our family went to Alaska
together. It was great! We started by taking a
cruise from Vancouver. It was my first time on
a big cruise ship. I loved the food, especially
the desserts. We stopped in different ports and
went sightseeing. There were icebergs, forests
and lots of animals. I enjoyed getting up close
to some bear cubs. When we finally left the ship
in Seward, Alaska, we did a land tour of Denali
State Park. That was cool. After that we rode
in a glass-roofed train for 8 hours, from Denali
to Anchorage. We took lots of pictures. It was
really fun. I also had a great time at Disney
World, especially The Magic Kingdom. Here
at home, my parents have taken me to three
Broadway shows that I loved: Aladdin, Lion
King, and Frozen.
WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO
VISIT?
One of my relatives went to Paris and sent
me some picture postcards. I fell in love with
the Eiffel Tower and would like to go there
some time.
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT
A CAREER GOAL?
My Mom is a dentist with a practice in
Astoria but I don't think I would like to do that.
After the fifth grade next year, I will be going to
Middle School where they discuss vocational
guidance and I will start considering a career.
DO YOU ENJOY READING WHEN
YOU ARE NOT READING FOR
SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS?
Yes, I read a lot for enjoyment. My Dad was
an influence. I loved Dr. Seuss when I was little.
He must’ve read me “The Cat in the Hat”
about ten thousand times. Then “Green Eggs
and Ham”, another ten thousand times! I read
lots of non-fiction about American history for
school and now reading Nancy Drew mysteries,
just for fun. I’m also reading a novel called “The
Power of Meow”, by David Michie.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR
FAVORITE TV PROGRAMS?
Nickelodeon shows like, Henry Danger,
Sponge Bob Square Pants, Game Shakers, and
the Disney Channel. On the big screen I really
liked the animated features Hotel Transylvania
(two of my grandparents came from Romania)
and The Incredibles. They made me laugh a
lot. For movies with real actors, I thought
Oceans 8 and 11, were really cool.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES OR
SPECIAL INTERESTS?
I like arts and crafts. I make my own greeting
cards and enjoy beading. I play the piano
and other instruments. I have been taking
piano lessons for three years at the Laconia
Music Studio. I also play other instruments
like the recorder, ukulele, and guitar. I love
many kinds of music, especially hip hop. I
like to sing and dance.
ARE THERE ANY LOCAL PLACES
YOU LIKE TO VISIT?
Yes, Dave and Busters in Westbury. It's an
indoor game arcade where you collect tickets
after playing the games. Then you trade the
tickets in for cool gifts and prizes. I also like to
go to carnivals. I love the scary rides that spin
you around, like the Roller Coaster, Scrambler
or Paratrooper. I can also play games of chance
there and eat cotton candy or funnel cake. I
love to watch fireworks and parades.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT
LIVING AT NST?
We have some of the nicest neighbors.
Sometimes we all get together for a dinner,
birthday party, or a barbeque. They feel like
family. Also, the building people are very nice
to me, like the concierge and doormen. They
always call me by name. It's a fun place to live.
