James Coll gave a fascinating
talk to the North
Shore Towers Women’s Club
entitled, “What Happened to
the Founders’ Congress?” Bobby
Gould reported that the lecture
was attended by over 100 women.
Coll talked about the role of
congress in our democratic system.
The three parts of our system of
government--legislative, executive,
and judicial--should be separate
but co-equal and serve as a check
on each other. James Madison
envisioned a powerful legislative
government, while Alexander
Hamilton envisioned a powerful
executive government. The legislative
branch, consisting of the House
of Representatives, gives power to
the people, and the Senate gives
power to the states.
Congress has the ability to
make laws, collect taxes, and
declare war. Today, what the
founders envisioned is no longer
happening. Congress now reacts
to the president, and in so doing it
reduces its role. Congress should
be using the power given to it by
the Constitution.
As usual, James Coll’s presentation
was spectacular, and everyone
was helped to understand what is
happening in a very clear way.
Mr. Coll is slated to return in
October for a program on impeachment
and the Constitution.
Aging Wisely
In July, a series of workshops
developed and led by Barbara
Goldstein was well
attended and received. Over 30
members attended each session
held at the Coleridge Lounge,
sharing relationships, dealing
with family problems, spouses,
partners, children, grandchildren
and siblings as well as.
Issues of forgiveness, reconciliation,
and friendships. Our
members were very impressed
with her skills and leadership
on many sensitive topics.
Although not a critical success,
members of the audience took the
critics to task for ageism and antifeminism,
among other disagreements.
Unlike their portrayal in
the film, the Poms are now fixtures
at parades and social and athletic
events. The discussion was led by
Vicki Mazel, with Dr. Nurit Israeli
providing invaluable insight into
the film’s characters. Missing the
point of the film was generally the
most frequent remark.
The next movie up for discussion
is "Rocketman," the biopic about
Elton John. Further information
is on the easel at the top of the
stairs leading to the theater, and
the yellow rose posters in the mailrooms
and at the entrance to the
coffee shop.
