Diane & Howard Lipman, Leslie & Richard Feldman BY STEPHEN VRATTOS The first heat wave of the summer, with sweltering temperatures in the ’90s, did little to deter the participants in Babes & Guys Golf Tournament, the annual charity event which raises money for the American Cancer Society, held on Thursday, June 7. On the contrary, according to Teri Oropallo, Ladies’ Golf President and Event Chair, this year’s affair attracted nearly 230 people. There were more golfers on the course, more card/Mah Jongg players in the large lower-level card room, and subsequently more high spirits, as the charity easily exceeded $30,000. The Tree of Life, which stands outside the Country Club main entrance, was a lot greener this year as well. Philanthropists outside of those who participated on the course or in the card room, can still give whatever they like. In return, a leaf is placed on the Tree in the name of a loved one, affected by cancer. With many days of contributions still to be tallied, the Tree had already $2000. Row after row of golf carts waited in formation for the 9 a.m. start, a phalanx of golfers armed with irons and woods, eager to tackle the greens, and in so doing, help in the battle against cancer. Cold water stations were set up at every third hole, with several interspersed “oases” providing lemonade, bottled water, oranges, apples, bananas, and other nutrition-packed snacks, to help combat the heat. Even the threat of severe thunderstorms could not dampen the mood. “Lawrence (Yacht and Country Club) was not as nice as this,” remarked Diane Lipman, at one such “bonus” refreshment station, located at the 5th hole. Diane was playing on a team with her husband, Howard, and good friends and NST residents, Leslie and Richard Feldman, shooting a respectable one over par after five.
