Contact JULIE WEISSMAN at 718 423-3017 34 North Shore Towers Courier n August 2016 BY VICKI MAZEL NST WOMEN’S CLUB A Midsummer’s Night Dream NST Women’s Club members were treated to an enchanting evening with Mikhail Baryshnikov at their midsummer program. After opening remarks by President Bobby Gould and an introduction by program chairperson Gloria Beck, the presenter, Marilyn Carminio, provided an entertaining retrospective of Baryshnikov’s background and rise to fame through a series of videos and narrative. The capacity crowd was hushed while viewing everything from Baryshnikov’s student audition tapes to the “Sinatra Suite,” a modern ballet, with Japanese ballerina, Elaine Kudo, dancing to the iconic tunes of “Ole Blue Eyes.” Spontaneous applause broke out several times during the evening, with members showing their appreciation for Baryshnikov’s artistry, athleticism, and diversity of talents. Ms. Carminio traced his rise to fame from a poor Latvian home to being considered one of the three major male ballet dancers of the century, along with Nijinsky and Nureyev. In addition to dancing, Baryshnikov also had his turn at acting on Broadway, in Hollywood and on TV, He tried his hand at photography and also founded a dance space for young ballet dancers to rehearse in a creative atmosphere. Enthusiastic audience members engage Speaker Carminio This launched the Women’s Club first program of their second calendar year and we now have a roster of more than 250 members.
