North Shore Towers Courier n August 2016 3 Why We Want a SMOKE-FREE Community Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year, WITH MORE THAN 41,000 OF THESE DEATHS FROM EXPOSURE TO SECONDHAND SMOKE! That’s why our Board is attempting to amend the Proprietary Lease and make North Shore Towers a smoke-free cooperative. In order to accomplish this task we must have a two-thirds vote of our residents. This effort becomes an awesome challenge since anyone who does not vote, or is away during the vote, is counted as a “NO” vote. Even more difficult to achieve our goal is the fact that in our recent Board Election, well less than two-thirds of our residents even voted! A committee of dedicated residents is meeting to assist us in getting out the “YES” Vote. Our plan is to have leaders in all three buildings join us in urging residents to vote. In sponsoring this vote, our Board is simply attempting to protect the health of our residents. It is not a political action. It’s also our committee’s united desire to fight the odds and achieve this worthy goal. We recognize that some residents will say that they don’t want to interfere with the rights of people in their own apartments. What they don’t know is that many present residents are having secondhand smoke infiltrate their apartments and causing a hazardous condition. Our goal is to have North Shore Towers be in the forefront of the battle against secondhand smoke. YOUR YES VOTE WILL HELP SAVE LIVES!
