North Shore Towers Courier n August 2016 37 Migdal Chapter of HADDASAH at North Shore Towers presents... “The Jews Of Harlem” Lecture by Marty Schneit On Wednesday, August 24, at 7:30 p.m., Migdal/Hadassah will hold an Open Meeting in the Large Card Room, below the Arcade in Building #2. The featured speaker will be proud and passionate New Yorker, historian and tour guide, Marty Schneit. In his talk, “The Jews of Harlem,” Schneit will describe a time when Harlem was the third largest Jewish settlement in the world, and why Jews selected Harlem as their residence in the 1880’s. He will also discuss some of the well-known Jews who lived in the area, such as Oscar Hammerstein I and Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rogers, Yoselle Rosenblatt and Milton Berle. Schneit is known for both his New York tours, which he conducts for Open House New York, and for his lectures in places, like the New York Public Library, 92nd Street Y, Jewish Community Centers, The Health Outreach Program and Presbyterian Hospital, among others. His talks have even been recorded by The Jewish Braille Institute for their audio magazine and lecture series. Talia Carner to Speak at Hadassah’s Book and Author Luncheon by Lily Cohen The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers, in association with the Jewish Book Council, is sponsoring a Book and Author Luncheon on September 22 at noon, at Towers on the Green. Talia Carner, author of current bestseller “Hotel Moscow: A Novel,” will be the featured speaker. “Hotel Moscow: A Novel,” takes place in Moscow in 1993 just after the fall of Communism. It involves a team of American women who come to Russia for a week to teach business skills to women entrepreneurs. Carner, a seventh generation Sabra, and Long Island resident, is the author of four popular novels and numerous award-winning stories, essays and articles. She is also an activist and supporter of global human rights projects and spearheaded several ground-breaking feminist and humanitarian initiatives. Her background includes being a women’s magazine publisher and editor; a teacher; a public speaker and a marketing consultant. Carner is a Board Member of the Hadassah Brandeis Institute, which is the Jewish Women’s Studies Department of Brandeis University. Carner is a sought after speaker who lectures widely to both women’s groups and community groups.
