48 North Shore Towers Courier n August 2016 Joe Reveman to be honored at Yankee Stadium, August 7 Adele Deerson PRO BONO ATTORNEY OF THE MONTH BY FRED CHERNOW During a gala dinner-dance at the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale in June, a special ceremony was held to honor Building One resident Adele Deerson. Deerson was recognized by the Nassau County Bar Association for her dedication as a volunteer for the Foreclosure Clinic, where she counsels homeowners facing financial difficulties. A laudable endeavor by itself, Deerson was also recognized as not only the sole attorney in Nassau County who’s practiced law for 70 years, but also as the only woman who’s done so for more than 50 years. Part of her citation read: “Her insight and knowledge continue to give peace of mind to those facing foreclosure or other financial problems.” Deerson graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brooklyn Law School in 1949. Since 1968, she’s been a professor at New York Institute of Technology until her recent retirement in 2014. In addition, she has served as an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and has managed her own private practice since her graduation. In addition, Deerson mentors middle school children at the Westbury Middle School, and is the proud mother of two children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild, with whom she’s very close, saying the latter, “He is the apple of my eye.” When told that she would be the Pro Bono Attorney of the Month, she commented, “It’s flattering and I am grateful for the honor. But truthfully, the practice of law for seventy years and my wonderful family have fulfilled my life, a life that has been very kind to me. I’ve loved every minute of my career and that’s why I want to ‘give back.’” Deerson’s been included in numerous publications including Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in American Women. She continues to run her private practice in Floral Park and handles cases throughout the metropolitan area. (l. to r.) Husband, Paul Berg; NCBA President, Martha Krisel; Honoree Adele Deerson BY STEPHEN VRATTOS North Shore Towers resident and military veteran, Joe Reveman, will be honored for his service in World War II during the 7th-Inning Stretch of the Yankees game on Sunday, August 7. Reveman entered the war at the tender age of 18, serving from 1943- 1945 as a radio operator and back-up gunner on the B17 Flying Fortress for the 398th Bomber Group, stationed in England. During his tour, he endured two plane crashes, one of which he was pulled out of the burning wreckage, which earned him the prestigious Purple Heart. Reveman’s heroic exploits were chronicled by his son in a film documentary, entitled “Riding the Airwaves: Stories of a B17 Radio Operator.” The film has been shown to hundreds of veteran groups, schools and patriotic organizations, and has been accepted as part of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC under the name, “The Joseph Reveman Collection. Reveman is a 30-year veteran of the NST community, as well, and has been active over the years as the Men’s Golf Treasurer—a post he held for 20 years—and organizing charity events for the UJA, for which he received a commendation for his incredible work. Born and raised in The Bronx, Reveman is a die-hard Yankees fan, so to be honored at Yankee Stadium, is an additional thrill, especially during a game. “42,000 will applaud me from the stands,” he said. “I don’t know how many millions from home!”
