Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers
CAN HOLOCAUST TRAUMA
BE INHERITED?
Linda Burghardt, Ph.D., Scholar in
Residence at the Holocaust Memorial
and Tolerance Center of Nassau County,
will be discussing this question as Migdal/
Hadassah’s featured speaker on Wednesday,
July 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Large Card Room
(below the Arcade in Building #2).
Burghardt was a “hidden child” during the
Holocaust and is currently researching her
fourth book. “Psychologists have long known
that the profound legacy of loss and suffering
experienced by Holocaust survivors deeply
affects their children,” she said. “Now biologists
are saying genetics can play an even
larger role in transmitting the trauma to the
next generation.” During her talk Burghardt
will describe the science and explain how this
genetic legacy can have consequences for the
children of survivors and their children.
In addition to writing books, Burghardt is an
independent journalist who has published more
than 200 articles and op eds in major newspapers
like the New York Times and Newsday.
She is also a featured conference speaker.

Hadassah Annual Card Party raises thousands for cancer research
Story and photos
by Stephen Vrattos More than 100 members
gathered at the Hadassah
Annual Card Party and
luncheon, which took place on
Wednesday, June 14, in the beautifully
renovated Towers on the
Green, to enjoy a delicious buffet
and fellowship, before retiring to
the large downstairs card room
for fun ’n’ games and further
camaraderie. Committee member
Eva Kessner welcomed the ladies
and introduced “resident medical
expert,” professional nurse and
fellow member, Judy Paris, who
gave a short presentation about the
great work which Hadassah makes
possible before lunch was served.
This particular film concentrated
on the dangers of melanoma (skin
cancer), but for more than 100
years, Hadassah, the Women’s
Zionist Organization, has been at
the forefront of all medicine, leading
the way in stem cell and cancer
research, the treatment of burn
and trauma victims, diabetes and
age-related Macular Degeneration
and repairing the brain to protect
against Alzheimer’s, among many
others. A 100% volunteer organization,
Hadassah gives every penny of
every dollar it collects to its causes,
which few other non-profits can
claim.
A raffle was also on the menu,
giving attendees the opportunity
to win great prizes, like restaurant
gift certificates to such popular
local eateries as La Baraka,
Ben’s Best Kosher Deli and the
Jolly Fisherman; spa facials and
mani-pedis from Pouran; and gift
cards donated by Linda Rappaport
of Charles H. Greenthal Property
Sales, North Shore Towers Valet
and Annette Kroll of Magic Realty.
Card Party participants were
donating to a worthy organization,
but for most, the event was
an excuse to spend time and break
bread with friends.
Wild Cards; (l. to r.) Zona Schreiber, Roz Chumsky, Marcia Jacobson,
Beverly Bord, Judy Wachs, Eva Kessner, Gloria Beck and Judy Paris
