BY FRED CHERNOW One of the niceties of life
at North Shore Towers
is the proximity to our
neighbors. You can walk through
the Arcade and greet a half dozen
people on the way to your
destination.
Sadly, not all our residents are
so fortunate. Many are unable
to leave their apartment unless
accompanied by a family member
or home health aide. Even then
they appear to have no connection
with their neighbors, as they
walk through the complex.
Barbara Covell and Fred
Chernow would like to forge a
link between the lonely residents
and the good neighbors who surround
them.
The concept is quite simple: a
volunteer good neighbor would
phone one resident on a weekly
or bi-weekly basis. It would be
a kind of “check in” call. You’re
not being asked to run errands or
make visits; just a telephone friend.
This has been tried in other communities
with great success.
Every pairing would, of course,
be different. To help make a
good match, Barbara Covell,
who is a Clinical Certified Social
Worker, would help link the Good
Neighbor and the receiver of the
call. She would also be available
to talk with the volunteer Good
Neighbor to discuss any matters
which might come up.
We would like to begin by setting
up a cadre of volunteer Good
Neighbors. Once we have that we
will seek the receivers of the phone
calls.
If you are interested in being part
of this project, please leave your
name and contact information
with either Barbara Covell at the
Concierge desk of Building #2 or
Fred Chernow in Building #1. Ask
any questions you may have on the
same sheet of paper and you will
get a call back.
GOOD NEIGHBORS PROJECT
NST 995 Live on Tape
BY JUDITH TANE
A Photos by Stephen Vrattos brand-new concept is being
developed for the enjoyment
and enrichment of all
residents at North Shore Towers.
Some of your enthusiastic friends
and neighbors have been working
on the creation of a series of programs
to be added to the broadcast
schedule of Channel 995, our
in-house television station.
With the support of the Board of
Directors and the technical assistance
of our professional experts,
Marty Ragusa and John Virga, we
have been meeting during the past
few months to explore and create
informative and entertaining
broadcasts to enhance the current
calendar of 995 programs. There
will be round table discussions on
meaningful issues, helpful hints
and recommendations on expanding
access to local resources, such
as museums, theatres, libraries, and
specialized services, and increasing
the participation of residents in the
range of activities available in our
own community.
We hope to utilize the many talents
and skills of the North Shore
Towers population in making this
venture a success, so expect to
become a vital part of the program
as we go forward. We will keep you
posted as we proceed and welcome
your participation and suggestions.
