Town Marshal
 Story and photos
Wby Stephen Vrattos orld War II hero Joe
 Reveman was honored
 at this year’s Little Neck/
 Douglaston Memorial Day Parade
as one of its Parade Marshals. The
approximately hour and a half event
is the largest Memorial Day Parade
in the country, and runs more than
 a mile along Northern Boulevard,
from Jayson Avenue in Great Neck
to 245th Street in Douglaston. As
such, it is often celebrated with
a who’s who of local and state
 politicos and dignitaries and this
year was no exception with such
luminaries as New York City Mayor,
 Bill de Blasio, in attendance.
This year marks the 90th uninterrupted
 year of the parade, which
honors those who have made the
 ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
 Reveman certainly carries that distinction,
  serving on a B17 Bomber
during the second world war as
part of the 398th Squadron. He
and his crew flew an incredible 24
missions a rare feat, given the casualty
loss of the U.S. Air Force was
 25%. Reveman even received the
 prestigious Purple Heart for injuries
 sustained in combat. Fittingly, the
 parade’s featured branch of service
was the U.S. Air Force, which
marks its 70th anniversary this year.
 Joining Reveman as his chauffeur
 was fellow NST resident Barbara
 Leonardi, who seemed to be
enjoying the day as much as her
 rider.
 Unfortunately, inclement weather
kept the usual crowds in abeyance,
  but the rains subsided shortly
 before the event’s 2 p.m. start and
 the parade proceeded without need
for an umbrella. But despite the
 persistent cloud coverage, nothing
 could dampen the smile on
 Reveman’s face or diminish his
status as one of the nation’s heroes.
