THURSDAY, JUNE 6, TOWERS ON THE GREEN
DR. PENNY STERN: A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
What we wouldn’t give for a good
night’s sleep! Good sleep is necessary
for optimal health and can
affect hormone levels, mood and weight. All
of us at some time have experienced the loss
of a good night’s sleep. Sleep problems include
snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, sleep deprivation
and restless leg syndrome are common.
When it happens consistently, it is miserable.
Dr. Penny Stern, a preventative medicine/
wellness specialist, will speak with us and perhaps
help solve our problems or show us ways we can help ourselves try
to solve our sleeplessness.
Dr. Stern is the Director of Preventative Medicine in the Center for
Equity Care- Katz Institute for Women’s Health and the Department of
Occupational Medicine, Epidemiology, and Prevention. She is currently
the President, Faculty Council of the Donald and Barbara Zucker
School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, the Co-Chair of Northwell’s
Continuing Medical Education Committee and an Assistant Professor
of the School of Medicine.
Her medical experience is cited with many honors and outstanding
accomplishments and we are most fortunate to have Dr. Stern take time
out from a most busy schedule to join us here at North Shore Towers.
Refreshments will be served. We look forward to having you join us for
a most informative meeting.

Celebrating Our
Jewish Future!
North Shore Towers 40th Annual
UJA-Federation of NY Gala
BY SUSAN
BARTELSTONE
A senior looking for
stimulating activities
and friendly people…a
grieving widower or an overburdened
caregiver…a parent
seeking a safe, fun place for
their child…UJA-Federation is
a lifeline for isolated, vulnerable
people of all faiths, races
and ethnicities facing a range
of challenges like these plus so
much more here in New York,
in Israel and around the world.
Its more than 70 partner organizations
in the New York area
alone provide services like emergency
cash assistance, access to
kosher food pantries and soup
kitchens, mental health counseling
and legal advocacy through
partners like The Jewish Board,
The Safe Center and Education
Alliance on Lower Eastside.
Other partners like the Sid
Jacobson JCC, the Samuel Field
Y, and Camp Kehilla provide
educational resources and fun
activities for people of all ages,
especially children, seniors and
those with special needs.
L'dor v'dor (from generation
to generation)! One special UJAfunded
program helping shape
the Jewish future is the Witness
Project. Holocaust survivors
and students in the Witness
Project program meet twice a
month at partner Sid Jacobson
JCC. Participants form close
bonds as survivors share their
stories of war and trauma, loss
and survival in a therapeutic
setting, facilitated by a program
director and social workers. The
collaboration culminates in an
arts exhibit and multimedia performances
in which students use
theater, music and art to depict
the survivors’ stories.
The program helps survivors
tell their stories in order to
bring them a sense of emotional
closure and healing. Students
receive a close look at a critical
time in Jewish history and are
inspired by survivors’ endurance
and resilience. Everyone who’s
seen one of these productions,
regardless of their faith, talks of
how emotionally affecting it is,
many tearing up.
NST and UJA: The Dynamic
Duo. For 40 years, North Shore
Towers has had a special relationship
with UJA–Federation,
raising hundreds of thousands
of dollars to support its charitable
work. Eneas Arkawy,
Chairperson of the North
Shore Towers-UJA Fundraising
Committee, shared some
thoughts: “In such uncertain
times, UJA’s purpose has never
been clearer. For more than 100
years, it has been at the forefront
of change, adapting to meet the
ever-evolving needs of a dynamic
community and building a future
that we want for ourselves, our
children and our grandchildren.”
This year’s 40th Anniversary
UJA Fundraising Dinner will
honor three exceptional NST residents:
Shirley Wershba, legendary
broadcast industry pioneer
(Business Leadership Award);
Dr. Stanley Goldsmith, Nuclear
Medicine expert (Leadership
Award); and Judy Lev, SVP at
Morgan Stanley and tireless
fundraiser for cancer survivors
(Community Service Award).
Shahar Azani, former spokesperson
of the Consulate General
of Israel, will be the guest speaker.
The dinner will also raise funds
for Sid Jacobson JCC’s Camp
Kehilla, a ground-breaking day
camp program for special needs
children.
