NST Golf Club hosts wounded vets
for a worthy cause
BY JILL DAVIS
It was a stellar morning
on May 17 when the
NST Golf Club hosted a
tournament of club members
and the Wounded Warrior
Amputee Softball Team, also
known as the USA Patriots.
Formed in 2011, the WWAST
is an organization of veteran
amputee volunteers
that brings together other
athletic veteran amputees to
overcome limits, inspire and
build a sense of camaraderie,
and help amputee children at
its annual week-long summer
Kids Camp.
Bob Guido, NST’s golf pro,
was on hand to introduce Nick
Clark and Greg Reynolds, two
WWAST volunteers who were
ready to tee off. But before anyone
could grab a golf club, it
was quickly revealed that just
two days earlier, Greg had broken
the Guinness Book of World
Records at the Hospital for Special
Needs with the most one-armed
push-ups, all while…wait for it…
carrying 40 pounds of weight on his
back. Talk about impressive!
Stan Yoel is the New York
coordinator for WWAST. He
explained that Greg, who’s from
Massachusetts, and Nick, who hails
from North Carolina, are part of a
national team that plays softball all
over the country. “They go out on
weekends, on their own time,” Stan
said, “and they play games or visit
schools or go to hospitals.” Stan
was proud to add that the team has
gotten national media attention
lately, with features on ESPN, HBO
and CBS, among others.
As for the games, Stan said,
“There are two basic rules. First, all
games are free. Second, the games
are open to everyone afterwards
This doesn’t look like regulation golf…
to meet the vets and hear a human
story about overcoming limits.”
In addition to softball, the vets
also play golf, and today’s outing
was a warm-up of sorts for
the group’s big golf fundraising
event coming up at the Rock Hill
Country Club in Manorville later
this month. After that, it’s on to
one of their biggest events of the
year when the WWAST softball
team takes on Boomer Esiason’s
l to r: Greg Reynolds, NST
Golf Pro Bob Guido, and
Nick Clark

All-Stars in Huntington. This will
be WWAST’s sixth visit to Long
Island, and it’s no wonder they
keep coming back. “The players
love Long Island more than anywhere
else,” said Stan.
WWAST’s motto, “No Quit, No
Limits, No Excuses” is no surprise.
