Matt Dickey Group
The Matt Dickey Group is a genre-bending experience
in sound. With an improvisational style, they play early
’70s soul music mixed with a smooth yet funky sound.
“It's a more modern take on the soul/funk/jazz/boogaloo
‘rare groove’ style of the early ‘70s, with rock, R&B,
reggae, hip-hop and other-worldly experimental flavors
thrown in,” explained front man and guitar player Matt
Dickey.
“For my group, recently I’ve been more interested in doing
smaller, local gigs where we can play a couple of sets
with enough time to stretch out and explore musically,”
Dickey said. "As a group that loves to improvise, it is important
to have that flexibility.”
Dickey has been living in western Queens for over 12
years.
“I've had the pleasure of connecting with, working with
and learning from some really top-notch local musicians
from all over the world,” he said. “There is a great community
of musicians and artists here and there are some great
things happening. I’m happy to be a part of it.”
The group consists of Matt Dickey playing guitar/writing/
arranging, Doron Lev on drums, Judd Nielsen on organ/
keys, Andrew Gould playing alto sax, Dave Levy on
trumpet, and Sean Nowell and Matt La Von playing tenor
sax.
Matt Dickey Group and their chill vibe will be gigging
around all the local haunts “workshopping some of the
material.”
If you are a person who appreciates a throwback groove,
a strong love and commitment to craft and a predilection
for improvisation, you will love the Matt Dickey Group.
