Donate to Thrift Shops to
Give Back Twice:
The end of the year also marks a good time
to clean out your homes, and if you have new
or gently used items or clothes you’d like to
get rid of, donating them is a great way to give
them a second life without being wasteful.
There are many thrift shops in Astoria that use
the money they make from selling your goods
to support local charities—so your items will
actually give back twice!
The Hour Children's Shop on Steinway
in Astoria, and Fancy Thrift on 36th Avenue
in Long Island City, support Hour Children,
which helps incarcerated and formerly incarcerated

women and their children successfully
“rejoin the community, reunify with their
families, and build healthy, independent, and
secure lives,” according to its website. You can
also volunteer with different mentoring programs
at hourchildren.org.
There’s also a Salvation Army on Steinway,
where 82 cents of every dollar spent is used
to support social services — from food for the
hungry to outreach to the elderly and ill — within
the community.
Participate in Local Food Drives
and Food Pantries:
Neighborhood staple the Irish Rover does an annual
food drive each November to donate canned
goods to City Harvest, combined with a darts tournament
by Astoria Social Darts — so you can have
fun and feel good about helping out. This year it
will be Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rover (3718 28th
Ave., Astoria).
The Hunters Point Civic Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofi
t dedicating to improving quality of life in Hunters
Point LIC, will be hosting their 5th Annual Hunters
Point Civic Thanksgiving Food Drive this November.
Last year, they collected, sorted and delivered 6,000
pounds of food and critical items to four local food
pantries in Queens. They’ll need people to drop off
boxes and posters at apartment buildings in Manhattan
and collect the food and items and bring them
to Long Island City. Anyone interested can contact
Brent O’Leary at brent.oleary@gmail.com.
Hour Children also has a food pantry, and donations
of non-perishable food can be brought
to their main office at 36-11 12th St., lower level,
in Long Island City Monday through Friday from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
