Fall for
these Tunes

Autumn means that it’s
time to turn over a new
leaf — even with your
music selections. Every few
months, we feature several
local bands that have
caught our attention. In
this issue, we’re putting the
spotlight on four groups
with unique sounds, so
no matter what music you
gravitate toward, there’s
something here for you.
Loser Cruiser
With one of the most unique vocal styles
in western Queens, lead singer Mackenzie
Friedmann and her impressive band Loser
Cruiser have a natural refined synergy that
creates a modern take on an eclectic mix
of genres.
Friedmann said that Loser Cruiser’s
sound is “a little throw-backy, a little progressive,
very emotional but you can always
groove to it.”
Refusing to be put into a box, Friedman
explained, “A lot of new artists are influenced
by many different styles of music
and are covering a large spectrum rath-
er than sticking to one specific almost
stereotype of a style. The music scene
seems to be increasingly more experimental

and therefore original.”
Lead guitarist and singer Henry Anderson
grew up in Astoria.
“Inherently the place you spend most
of your time in will influence you, the
other performers and the creatives you
meet, but also just the look of everything,”
Anderson said. “You can walk
down one block and every house
looks completely different than the
last. It’s an amalgamation here and
the neighborhood goes where it goes
like we want our music to.”
Keyboard player Ryan Shapiro also
contributes to vocals and the roundrobin
instrument exchange during
performances.
Sometimes playing the
“twinkle the glockenspiel
can,” Friedman creates a
rhythm and melody out of
anything put in front of her.
With miles of style, Friedman
might not sound like anyone
specifically, but her heartfelt
expressiveness is reminiscent
of Fiona Apple.
Together the band is more
than the sum of their parts,
confidently delivering the perfect
package of sound, performance
and quality.
