7 ways to tell your community ‘thank you’
this November
Donate Where You Live:
There have been so many worthy
causes to donate to this year—from political
stands to natural disaster relief—but
along with giving to national movements,
it’s also important to give monetarily to
work being done within our own communities.
You may not even realize how
many nonprofits are based right in Astoria/
Long Island City itself.
For example, CIANA (Center for the
Integration and Advancement of New
Americans), headquartered on Newton
Ave., is working to serve new immigrants
in NYC through ESL classes, legal services,
civics lessons, tutoring and more
(donate at cianainc.org).
Or, there’s Zone126, which drives community
transformation for children and
families in Astoria and LIC's concentrated
pockets of poverty in ZIP codes 11101,
11102 and 11106. Zone126 is hosting an
upcoming Holiday “Cocoa Mingle” for students
at Peter Van Alst Elementary School
and needs the community’s help with book
donations to give to students at the event.

There are also some more grassroots opportunities
— with organizations like Take
Two NYC, which collects and distributes
resources like new socks to street-sleeping
New Yorkers in need. You can donate by
texting SOCKS to 855-735-2437 or give
online at Text.gives/socks.

Though most of us start the year with lofty resolutions to be more philanthropic and giving of our
time, we often reach the end of the year wondering the same thing: where did the months go and
what did I actually do? It can sometimes feel like a cop-out to make the bulk of our efforts toward
the year’s close, but late is better than never, and it also can be incredibly helpful to devote a certain
time period just to giving-back goals. With Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday, November is an ideal
time to fi nd solid ways to generate goodwill right within the very communities we live in.
Luckily, at this time of year local organizations and businesses are especially in need of our help.
Here are seven concrete things you can do this month to serve your community in Queens:
