October GM Stakeholders Meeting
8 AIRPORT VOICE, OCTOBER 2021
JFK Redevelopment top on agenda
Charles Everett opened the
meeting with a brief statement
stating that JFK is vital global
gateway as evidenced by the
flights and diplomats arriving for
the 76th UNGA session with over
200 aircraft moves without incident.
He also mentioned the upcoming
snow season which will
be discussed in detail with an upcoming
Port call on the subject.
A special presentation was
given by Deputy Director Redevelopment
Jim Heitman to bring
the stakeholder community up
to date on JFK redevelopment
modification and milestones. He
presented a couple of timeline
graphs on beginning infrastructure
projects leading to more extensive
terminals construction in
mid 2022. He referred to the announcement
recently of the T6
redevelopment as well as continuing
but anticipated agreement
with the T1 expansion. Of
keynote was Heitman’s explanation
of the newly simplified roadway
network. into JFK Airport.
Calling these “decision points”
in that drivers would make a simple
choice of going to the North
or South side terminals making
it easier from the Van Wyck
Expressway. There would be a
course correction within the airport
if one took the wrong route.
In addition to making it simpler,
the newly design network would
save on construction costs by
eliminating additional bridges
that were part of the original plan.
He stated that there has been
and will be lots of coordination
with NYS DOT and supplement
to the FAA EA already submitted,
in accomplishing this objective.
Due to the expansion at
JFKIAT, and other terminals
there is need for additional hardstand
areas. He showed a chart
with areas that are being resurfaced
and reconditioned to handle
the anticipated loads.
Building 111 was identified
as the main area for developers
and other activities such as
the location for local workforce
outreach through the Readiness
Boot Camp used as a pilot program
for MBE opportunities. 111
is also currently the home of the
JFK AOC.
There will also be barging operations
at the airport to support
the physical side of redevelopment.
Both Heitman and GM Everett
reached out to the meeting
attendees seeking responses to
the idea of re-engaging with the
community through the stakeholders
working groups, which
were put on pause during the
pandemic. Since the proposed
new roadway is one of the main
areas, Heitman suggested this
might be a good place to reengage.
Everett closed the meeting by
saying “ we want to make best
use of people’s time and tell us
when they want to re-engage
and align with critical path as we
move forward.”
Reports from other airport departments
as follows:
FAA Dave Siewart said there
is a consistent 800-900 flights
per day. He is waiting for any
slot changes that might impact
his operations. He and Jim
Heitman’s team are working
“hand in hand” to insure no impacts
from the redevelopment
from airside.
CDC Sara Meehan said that
the new requirements for reduced
travel restrictions. Are not
finalized and will be posted to the
CDC website and shared with the

LAX and Atlanta will handle authorized

aid in bringing Afghan refugees
through Operation Allied Welcome.
