VRH, Aeroteam team up
for new cargo facility
Soliciting MBE, WBE, and SDVOBs participation
VRH Construction and Aeroterm,
in a webinar on September 14, announced
the development of a new
cargo facility at JFK International Airport
and solicited participation from
Minority/Woman-owned contractors
and vendors. Aeroterm is the developer
and future operator of the new facility,
the first new cargo infrastructure
to be constructed at the airport in 30
years. VRH, the general contractor,
joined Aeroterm in the project introduction
and overview. About 50 local union
contractors and vendors attended the
virtual presentation, invited by Aeroterm,
VRH, the Port Authority of NY
and NJ and several Queens-based organizations.
The project is already underway
with the Abatement and Demolition
of three existing buildings on
North Boundary Rd. at JFK. The relocation
of a 90-inch sanitary sewer
main that runs underneath the new

FAA Youth Task
Force
Cradle of Aviation participates
The Youth Access to American
Jobs in Aviation Task Force held its
fourth public meeting on Oct. 8, 2021.
The meeting featured a Q&A session
with Amy Spowart, president and CEO
of the National Aviation Hall of Fame,
and Jennifer Baxmeyer, executive director
of the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
The Task Force, comprised of aviation
leaders from industry and academia,
is charged with providing independent
recommendations and
strategies to the Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) to educate youth on
career opportunities in aviation. In addition,
the Task Force will identify and
recommend opportunities for apprenticeships,
workforce-development programs
and careers in the aviation for
students.
“The work that the Youth in Aviation
Task Force is doing to attract students
to pursue careers in aviation is invaluable.
They have included many industry
leaders, supporters and voices to
get a comprehensive picture for the
best recommendations and advice.
Our Museum is happy to have such
wonderful allies tackling these industry
issues.” said Jennifer Baxmeyer,
Executive Director, Cradle of Aviation
Museum.
Focusing on U.S. high school students,
these recommendations and
strategies will be used to facilitate and
encourage students to enroll in aviation
career and technical education
courses. These include aviation manufacturing
and maintenance and science,
technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM).
“It is imperative that the Youth in
Aviation Task Force and our partners
from academia and industry find ways
to meet youth where they are and ensure
that all children have the opportunity
to reach their dreams of a career
in aviation.” said Amy Spowart, president
and CEO National Aviation Hall of
Fame.
The Task Force will submit recommendations
and strategies from their
meetings to the FAA Administrator and
the appropriate Congressional committees.

and 42 loading docks. The project
is targeting LEED Gold certification.
Construction is expected to take two
years, following which Aeroterm will
own and operate the facility for 30
years.
Tuesday’s presentation detailed
the project requirements for exceeding
20% minority business enterprise
(MBE) participation, 10% woman
business enterprise (WBE) participation
and 3% service-disabled veteran
owned businesses (SDVOB)
participation. VRH also stressed the
importance of using local business
entities for subcontracting and supplier
vendor opportunities, with a particular
emphasis on Queens-businesses.
VRH described the prequalification
process for contractors to be invited to
bid on this and future projects. Project
Executive Magdy Allam explained the
next packages that will be issued for
bid and broke down the trades that will
be required. The meeting concluded
with a robust question and answer session.
