The ceremony allows senators across New York State the opportunity to honor outstanding women whose contributions to their neighborhood have enriched the lives of those in the community. “Sunnyside Community Services does so much for residents of western Queens, and Judy does so much for Sunnyside Community Services,” Gianaris said. “With programs ranging from geriatric mental health programs to pre-K and afterschool programs for our kids, SCS enriches the lives of Sunnyside residents of all ages, and Judy is at the center of it all. I thank Judy for her steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others, and I am proud to honor her as a Woman of Distinction.” CAREER DAY Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder visited M.S. 137, America’s School of Heroes, in Ozone Park to teach students the inner-workings of the New York State legislature at their Annual Career Day. A variety of local professionals participated in career day, from firefighters to music producers, to provide students firsthand knowledge about their professions. HELPING VETERANS Congressman Joe Crowley was joined by members of Vietnam Veterans of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars on May 13 to announce the Serving America’s Veterans Effectively Act (SAVE Act). This new legislation will prompt doctors to ask their patients if they have served in the armed forces. According to the Crowley, including veteran status in patient records reminds doctors to screen for and treat conditions that may be more common in veterans, such as ALS, hepatitis, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.
