Human
Trafficking Survey
Open to response until November 26
Frontline employees are asked to
complete a brief survey to help us combat
human trafficking. According to the
World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
website, “Trafficking in persons is
a serious crime and a grave violation of
human rights. Every year, thousands of
men, women and children fall into the
hands of traffickers, in their own countries
and abroad. Almost every country
in the world is affected by trafficking,
whether as a country of origin, transit
or destination for victims.”
• People are trafficked for sexual
exploitation, forced labor, forced begging,
forced marriage; for selling children
and as child soldiers, as well as
for removal of organs;
• Women make up 49% and girls
23% of all victims of trafficking;
AIRPORT V 8 OICE, NOVEMBER 2021
• Most victims are trafficked within
their countries’ borders – those trafficked
abroad are moved to the richest
countries.
The Port Authority is partnering
with United Against Slavery (UAS) in
a global effort to better understand the
complex obstacles to liberating the 24.9
million people held in forced labor and
commercial sex slavery. Therefore, it is
asking all frontline workers in the transportation
industry, not only aviation, to
participate in a brief survey. The UAS
survey is open now until November 26,
2021. If necessary, this survey can be
completed in multiple sessions. Please
click on the link to start the survey.

Air Forwarders
on Sustainability
Seek support for investments
BY BRANDON FRIED
Exec Dir. Airforwarders Association
This initiative allows the Biden administration
to set forth a plan to dramatically
boost the production of fuels
made from waste or plants to reduce
the environmental cost of flying.
Freight forwarders are becoming
involved in the environmental sustainability
effort as well.
As the issue gains prominence
throughout the supply chain, industry
organizations such as the Airforwarders
Association (AfA) are establishing working
groups comprised of key players, including
stakeholders such as airlines,
trucking interest groups, and airports.
As part of its effort to learn about
existing environmental conditions
and industry initiatives AFA’s environmental
coalition issued a survey to its
members and other stakeholder organizations.
They found that 60% of responding
companies currently have
sustainability programs.
In addition, many want to learn
more about best practices such as how
to begin a program and where to find
business partners to work collaboratively
in addressing the carbon challenge.
Freight forwarders and their industry
partners expressed several motivational
factors in addressing climate
change.
Some are responding to customer
expectations that require transportation
vendors to focus on sustainability.
Others are concerned about supplier
availability of industry vendors who can
achieve future carbon savings goals.
Many expressed concern about increased
legislation or requirements
from the White House that build on the
Biden plan, and create mandates and
business constraints to further the concerted
effort to address the challenge.
Most of the existing sustainable fuel
alternatives today can cost at least $6
per gallon. But government subsidies
must help in reaching the objectives.
This assistance should come in the
form of substantial tax credits for fuels
that reduce emissions by a considerable
percentage, as well as support
from grant and loan programs that encourage
investments in new production
facilities.
American Airlines Black Professional Group (BPN), one of the Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) held its global diversity awareness month last month. Here, members
from JFK Black Professional Network had a fun day with exhibits and give-aways to paiy tribute to the diverse cultures around the world. They held company-wide expos
and events to share the mission of the BPN EBRG with AA business partners and to foster an inclusive environment for all.
