ICAO pushes for less C02
UN agency urges sustainability
The aviation industry, alongside
environmental groups, requested
worldwide governments to set a
timeframe for agreement on a longterm
target to reduce CO2 emissions
from air transport at a recent meeting
of the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO), a specialized
United Nations agency. These
meeting were in advance of the
UNGA74 session.
At the ICAO’s 40th Assembly
where close to 3,000 aviation officials
attended this Plenary Session
was designed to provide insight on
the ways innovation can be implemented
for aviation development
and inspire policy makers on how
innovation can be embraced by governments.
ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa
Benard Aliu highlighted
the critical importance of new technologies
to the continued safety, security,
and sustainability of flight as
a key issue.
The aviation industry should
continue to embrace new technologies
to transform ways of doing
business while ensuring their
safe, secure, efficient and sustainable
use. “Our sector has survived
and thrived because of its ability
to adapt to new technologies and to
new expectations from global societies,
and it must continue to do so
today,” Dr. Aliu said, noting that
the UN Climate Action Summit provided
particular emphasis on environmental
issues. “Through this
Innovation Fair and UN Climate
Summit, together with our upcoming
discussions at the 40th Assembly,
we can realize together an even
stronger foundation for ICAO Member
States to build upon, and send a
strong signal to the world that the
international aviation community
is leveraging its historic ability to
cooperate and to innovate toward
more ambitious long term emissions
objectives for international aviation,”
he underscored.
The aviation sector – including
the world’s airlines, airports, air
traffic management providers and
the makers of aircraft and engines –
was one of the first to set long-term
climate goals a decade ago. The industry
says that it would like to see
agreement reached on a comprehensive
2050 goal for aviation CO2 by the
next ICAO Assembly in 2022 to leverage
support for its climate action.
