LGA Kiwanis Kids Day
Fun on the airfield
The LaGuardia Kiwanis
Kids Day is turning into a tradition.
The LaGuardia chapter
of the Kiwanis is very active
all year with many activities
for children in the East Elmhurst/
Corona neighborhood.
This Kids day grows each year
with more and more families
bringing their children to see
commercial aircraft ,military
planes, The Port Authority
ARFF Fire Fighting unit
trucks, meet with law enforcement
representatives from local,
state and federal agencies,
chat with Captains of airline
planes, and flight attendants
about their jobs, and above all,
enjoy the great grilled franks
and drinks provided by the
Port and Kiwanis. Kiwanis
members are all volunteers and
often work in one of the large
airports in New York. They
are happy to volunteer to show
the kids a great time. And not
just a good time, but an opportunity
to meet with professionals
in aviation who are happy
to talk about their jobs and answer
question from children
who may dream about a job in
the airports or related service
areas.
As a result of a day like this,
many children also find opportunities
to visit other airport
facilities, perhaps tour an air
traffic control tower, or make
friends with the Customs Border
Protection and Port Authority
Police canines. Overall, it is
a great day to get up front and
personal with huge aircraft and
the people who make them fly.

On Monday, September 23, 2019, U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT)
Secretary Elaine L. Chao visited LaGuardia
Airport and presented two checks;
one for LaGuardia and one for JFK Airports
from the Airport Improvement Program(
AIP) in addition to announcing
the grants for many other airports in the
U.S. Millions were granted to the 5 Port
Authority airports which each received
millions for taxiways and runways construction
or rehab; LGA $7 million, JFK
$28 million, Stewart $10 million, Newark
$8 million, and Teterboro $1 million. This
event served as the nationwide announcement
of nearly $1 billion in additional airports
funding across the United States
for airport infrastructure investment
through the AIP.
Chao detailed that the “ funding is
for improvements and to build taxiways,
runways and critical infrastructure
projects while improving safety
and reducing delays.”
She said that the DOT has three priorities:
safety is always 1; vital infrastructure
is 2; innovation is 3. She said
changes were being made “ with concerns
of privacy without hampering innovation
, preparing us for the future. ”
Chao pointed out the necessity of careful
innovation to meet the demands of
air travel growth which will surpass
the over 1 billion passengers who travelled
out of New York domestically and
internationally in 2018.
Along with Secretary Chao for the
announcement were Kirk Shaffer, FAA
Associate Administrator for Airports,
Jennifer Solomon, FAA Eastern Region
Administrator and Tony Vero, General
Manager of LaGuardia Airport. Shaffer
oversees the AIP funding which has
been $7 billion overall to airports and
is responsible for national airport planning,
airport safety, standards, airport
design engineering, and regulatory
compliance. In addition matters involving
delays due to weather and unforeseen
long delays fall under his office’s
purview.
After her presentation, Secretary
Chao took the opportunity to board a
special Port Authority bus with Tony
Vero, Delta’s Hanna, Bergeson and Marzullo,
Patty Clark and Richard Smyth
of the Port , and others to tour a bit of
the LGA redevelopment passing by the
new Delta D, Terminal C, and renovated
B. She had the experience of taking the
same ride as thousands of the travelling
public do and experienced both the awe
and maze of roadways that have been
kept open to allow for traffic and rebuilding
of the airport.
