Ridgewood singer set to perform new album
BY EMILY DAVENPORT
A local musician with
Queens roots will be
headlining a show at a
Brooklyn venue in February.
Born and raised in
Ridgewood, Skela is a selftaught
indie-pop singer/
songwriter and musician that’s
primarily based in Bushwick.
After initially gaining
attention from record labels
for her contribution to the lead
singer on Josh Jacobson’s 2015
single “Not Alone,” Skela has
since released a number of
EPs through Sony Music.
In December 2018, Skela
released her new visual album
“Project 10” through HERØ
Records/Sony’s RED MUSIC.
The album is a collection of
10 songs and 10 music videos
that feature visuals from
throughout the city and
Brooklyn that were taken by
Skela herself.
Each song on the album was
inspired by Skela’s frustrations
of being a female musician in
the music industry.

“After spending the last
year making the kind of music
I had always hoped to put out
into the world, I decided that
I was going to give myself the
kind of career and path that I
wanted instead of waiting on it
to be given to me,” Skela said.
“The 10 songs and 10 music
videos were all made by friends
— because they wanted to and
so they did. Project 10 is about
the act of creating because that
is exactly what artists do.”
Skela’s taking the new
album to the stage at Rough
Trade NYC, located 64 N Ninth
St. in Bushwick, where she
will perform her new album
live for the first time. The
show will take place at 9 p.m.
on Feb. 9, with doors opening
at 8 p.m.
Tickets are available online
for $10 in advance or $15 on the
day of the show. Ticket holders
must be 18 years or older to see
the show.
