STORY: Nor’easter set to pound Queens and NYC tomorrow; warnings
out for heavy rain, wind and coastal fl ooding
SUMMARY: The city’s Department of Emergency Management issued
a citywide travel advisory for Friday, Dec. 21, after forecasts indicate
the approaching storm could drop between two and three inches of
rain and produce winds potentially reaching up to 45 mph.

and silver anniversaries of some tremendous
events in local and American
history. Th ese are occurrences which
instilled a tremendous sense of hope,
optimism and pride among those who
witnessed them.
Th e most recent of these special events
occured 25 years ago, in 1994. Th at was
the year when the New York Rangers
broke a 54-year Stanley Cup drought —
setting off a wild celebration across the
city among fans who had endured one
heartbreaking season aft er another.
Th e year 1994 also marked the fi rst
time that the United States hosted the
FIFA World Cup, the month-long soccer
tournament that sets the bar not only for
excellence in the game, but also bringing
the world together through sport.
But these events pale in comparison
to the three incredible moments of 1969
which will observe golden anniversaries
in the new year.
Leading the way, of course, was the
moon landing. Neil Armstrong took “one
small step for man, one giant leap for
mankind” on the surface of the Moon
on July 20, 1969. Th rough the miracles
of science and engineering, as well as the
determination of Americans willing to
“go where no man has gone before,” the
country dreamed big — and achieved the
dream.
A few weeks later, on Aug. 12, 1969,
hundreds of thousands of young people
gathered in upstate New York for the
wild, three-day Woodstock music and
arts festival. Some of the greatest musical
performers of the 20th century for a
concert that promoted harmony through
music at a time of internal and external
confl ict.
Finally, there’s Flushing’s own “Miracle
Mets” of 1969. Before that season, Mets
fans endured one losing season aft er
another; fi nishing in ninth place in 1968
with 73 wins (then a franchise high) was
seen as a triumph). But through talent,
determination, a little bit of good luck and
a lot of great pitching, the 1969 Mets won
the National League pennant, then toppled
a mighty Baltimore Orioles club in
the World Series.
Each of these events lift ed the spirits of
Queens residents in one way or another.
Th ey made everyone feel a whole range of
uplift ing emotions — pride, joy, hope and
optimism chief among them all.
Th ese are challenging times for our
country, but let’s move forward in the
best way possible — hoping against hope
that we’ll overcome the obstacles and
achieve our dreams in the end.
May all of you enjoy a happy, healthy,
prosperous and peaceful 2019!
