Outback in Queens Place mall abruptly closes
Visitors were surprised to discover that an Elmhurst Outback Steakhouse mysteriously
closed on Aug.27. Representatives from Cushman & Wakefi eld said that the decision
to close the Australian-inspired steakhouse “was based solely on business circumstances.”
Th e location had been in the mall since 2001 but had been in decline according
to negative customer reviews on the website Yelp.

New authentic Chinese
restaurant opens in Bayside
You Garden Xiao Long Bao restaurant opened in Bayside on Aug. 28, serving up
authentic Shanghai cuisine to its customers. Th e eatery was the second restaurant
from the owners, who also run Shanghai You Garden Dumpling House in downtown
Flushing. According to Gao, their goal is to introduce Shanghainese food to a
broader population.
Mayor proposes jail in Kew
Gardens in push to close Rikers
Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed a controversial plan to erect a jail in Kew Gardens,
part of his plan to introduced four borough-based jails as an alternative to Rikers
Island. De Blasio proposed to redevelop the Queens Detention Complex at 126-02
82nd Ave. and the nearby municipal parking lot into a 1,510-bed corrections center.
Th e mayor also planned to open similar facilities in the Bronx, Brooklyn and
Manhattan in a push to shut Rikers down.
Tornado hits Whitestone and College Point
An EF-0 strength tornado hit parts of Whitestone and College Point on Aug. 3, leaving
evidence of destruction in its wake. Th e National Weather Service sent out a tornado
warning to residents living Queens and the Bronx on Aug. 2. It was reported that the
twister was about as wide as a football fi eld -- 100 yards -- and had winds that reached
between 75 to 80 miles per hour. Residents reported fallen trees and downed power
lines throughout the two areas.
